Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12 NIV)
My notes from Snell: A key to life. Honor = to respect. To give weight to something. To focus on other. To become open to other. To give respect gives blessing.
It isn’t surprising that this commandment flows from the previous. When we are taking time out to rest and remember God and our other relationships, to be involved in our own personal introspection in light of our relationships, then it seems logical that we would focus in on the most foundational of all relationships: between parents and children. If we can honor, that is, if we can respect, focus, and be open to our parents, then quite logically we will extend attitude in other relationships. We know from experience and observation that when families are dysfunctional, those families will produce offspring who will pass on those dysfunctions to their own children. Yet, those households where love and respect are fostered will bring forth a blessing to themselves and to our society.
